Leadership & Management Skills

Course Aim

To highlight a range of knowledge, skills and practical strategies in order to positively impact on the way you lead and manage others.

Course Objectives

By the end of the session you will be able to:


  • Define the distinct characteristics of leadership & management.

  • Examine 10 classic leadership styles and which you most identify with and recognize as your current choices.

  • Identify your current preferred ‘influencing styles’ & the implications of these for you & your team.

  • Identify examples and key characteristics of ‘great leaders.

  • State what can prevent people from delegating and what stops you specifically.

  • Identify and discuss the key steps involved in effectively delegating tasks.

  • Highlight specific tasks that you can delegate in the short, medium and longer terms and who these tasks will be delegates to.

  • List a range of simple ways to monitor performance to help ensure success.

  • State a range of specific Problem-Solving techniques, including simple Fish Bone diagrams, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Mind Mapping, the 5 Why’s and various Brain Storming methods.

  • Identify a range of specific Decision-Making techniques, including using Pros & Cons, Force Field Analysis and Decision Lists.

  • Note key learning points and any specific activities on your Action Plan.


 

Developing an  Effective Team Skills

Course Aim

To highlight a range of ideas, strategies and techniques that can assist in and developing an effective team.

Course Objectives

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Identify your 7C’s of developing an effective team and why you chose them.

  • Discuss the Adair Model of Action Centered Leadership (Task, Team and Individual);

  • Identify what, in relation to the Adair Model, an effective leader should do for each part and what more you might do.

  • State the different stages of team development in relation to the Tuckman Model and where your team is right now.

  • State some of the key motivation factors in the workplace based on well-respected theories.

  • Identify what you can do to create the most motivational working environment.

  • Highlight a range of ways to deal with conflict situations.

  • Identify the main ‘Virtues’ and ‘Villains’ of leadership behaviors and honestly appraise yourself against them.

  • Discuss and develop a range of ‘needs’ for the Team and the Leader which are essential for success.

  • Note key learning points and any specific activities on your Action Plan.


 

Coaching & Mentoring Skills  

Course Aim

To highlight a range of skills and practical techniques in order to improve the impact of the coaching and mentoring you carry out with others.

Course Objectives

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • State the key components of the ‘Conscious Competence’ model in relation to how people learn.

  • Identify the differences between Mentoring and Coaching.

  • Identify the skills and characteristics of an effective coach/mentor.

  • Identify the range of learning styles.

  • State the three stages of the coaching process.

  • Identify how to construct a basic ‘Task Analysis’ enabling focused instruction.

  • Practice delivering a brief coaching session based on the coaching of a simple task.

  • State a range of specific communication techniques used by effective mentors.

  • Practice the skills of mentoring.

  • Identify good practice in relation to giving and receiving feedback.

  • Discuss how coaching and mentoring might be used to greater effect within your organization.

  • Note key learning points and any specific activities on your Action Plan.


 

Style of the Training

A mixture of training methods will be used including group activities and exercises, group discussion, some individual work, brief practice coaching and mentoring activities, action planning and direct input from the Trainer.
